Mm Is For Marvellous

I love letters and sounds, and when it comes to alphabet-based resources I know exactly what I’m looking for.  I want lowercase letters.  I want clear fonts.  I want letter-word relationships that demonstrate an understanding of phonics and awareness of the most common sounds.  I’m not asking or much, am I?!

I was so pleased to find the Mm Is For Me wall stickers checked all my boxes.  Ashleigh Hoyle has certainly done her research, and consulted with early childhood educators.  Each letter is filled with images of an animal (many Australian) or object with the corresponding sound.  I’ve put the Little Alphabet Wall Sticker Pack in navy onto a wall in the stairwell beside the kitchen table.  My daughter already likes to sit at the table with me to write some times, so it seems logical to have an alphabet nearby.  So far the stickers are a huge hit.  Mr Almost-Two points out the “crocodile-snap-snap” and “gecko-gecko” while Little Miss 4 delights in telling anyone who will listen about letters in her name and sounds she recognises.

Mm Is For Me also stock personalised clothes, cushions and more.  How happy was I to find this on their site?

Each picture in the letter begins with the same sound as the letter, so giraffes are for Gemma’s G, but not for Gabby’s G, and acorns are for Ava and but don’t make the sound for Anna’s A.

This is especially important for children whose name does NOT start with the most common sound for a letter.  Phonics can be so complicated!  I really appreciate the thought that Ashleigh obviously puts into her products, and it was great to meet her in person at the last Mathilda’s Market in Brisbane.

Thanks to Ashleigh from Mm Is For Me I am giving away a Big Alphabet Wall Sticker Pack (valued at $65) to one lucky SquiggleMum reader!  To win just leave a comment saying which Mm Is For Me product is your favourite. Comp is open to Aussie residents only and closes at 8pm Friday 27/8/10.  Winner drawn at random.  One entry per person please.

Congratulations Lucy. You are the lucky winner!

Elliott is also just starting to recognise letters, and differentiate between hers and her sisters written names!

Love the boys personalised name cushion. Gus is at the reading letters everywhere stage and every “G” is a G for Gus. Love the thought and attention to detail re the G for giraffe vs G for Goose – you are right phonics are tricky. Not a lot of English makes sense. really thinking a lot about it this year with a Preppie who loves reading/spelling/writing and trying to answer her questions re why “bush” is spelt with an “u” but “books” which sounds kind of the same at the start is spelt with the “oo” sound but then “Rush” is not said the same way as “Bush” but then “push” is. And then got into the “cough”, “rough”, “bough” confusion. Would be funny if it wasn’t so confusing

*Is spelt even a word? Spelled?

And you didn’t chime in on my Facebook question a while back (I was counting on you!) re apostrophe for Gus for possessives. Is is Gus’ or Gus’s (as in Gus’ marbles but said Gusses?) Help me out here Sqigglemum….I am lost in a world of confusion : )

I love the alphabet wall stickers. Ella will sit for hours ‘writing’ all her letters and will often spell out words she sees on signs around the place.

  6. Miss Carly says:

This would be fantastic to give to the school that I am completing my internship at.

I would personally love the name cushions or stickers {but that would be in the future once I have children or would be a fantastic present for a friend or family member}.

I’m looking to decorate the girls’ room at the moment, so it’s all about wall stickers. Ash has done a fabulous job! I like the name cushions, but have pretensions to sewing that sort of thing myself so I might just steal the idea when we get to their bed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ashliegh a few months ago at a business networking event, and her produces are better in real life, such high quality. I do love the Phonic T-shirts I have 2 N named girls and 2 D named boys. But it is the Large Wall letters that I want to get first as my eldest son has Audio Processing Disorder. These letters are perfect for him.
