Sacrifice

cream biscuit sacrificeI saw the sweetest example of sacrifice.  A young boy picked up the last cream biscuit from the morning tea platter at church and sat down beside my daughter.  He twisted it apart (how do kids learn that?) and looked at the two halves.  In one hand he had the cream half, and in the other the plain.  He looked back and forth between the two hands, then passed my daughter the cream half.  The cream half! I couldn’t help but smile.

To sacrifice is to surrender or give something up, for the sake of something or someone else.

Mums make a lot of sacrifices.  We make sacrifices in order to become mothers, and we sacrifice so much for our children once they are here.  For the sake of our precious babies we surrender sleep and showers.  For the sake of our toddlers we give up luxuries like gorgeous-but-impractical shoes and long lattes with friends.   And when our kids are sick – we let go of whatever we’ve got planned, no matter the cost!  Some of the sacrifices we make as mums are short lived.  Others, change us forever.  We often grumble about what we’ve had to give up but the truth is we’d all do it again in heart beat.  That’s a mother’s love.

At Easter I’m reminded of a Father’s love.  As a Christian I believe that for the sake of His children, God gave up His Son Jesus.  I believe that God’s love for me is unconditional, incomparable, and beyond my understanding.  And I believe that He demonstrated that love through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.  A costly sacrifice.  A sacrifice that changed everything – forever.

For God so loved the world, He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NIV)

Thanks for reminding us of that most important sacrifice of all. It kind of makes all our motherly sacrifices (important as they are) pale into insignificance.
