Give A Little
Hello. My name’s Catherine and I’m a tv junkie. At the end of a long day of mothering I like nothing better than to flop on the couch in front of whatever’s on telly. I have my favourite shows, but I’ll still put the tv on even if there’s nothing I particularly want to watch. Currently however, I’m in withdrawal. For the season of Lent I am giving up tv FIVE NIGHTS A WEEK! So far it’s only been four nights and I still have thirty-six to go. Oh boy.
I’m participating in the Lent Event. It is an opportunity to give up a luxury item for forty days, save the money you would have spent and donate it instead. The money goes to life changing projects in Papua New Guinea, East Timor, South India, Sudan, the Solomon Islands and Zambia.
Last year I gave up lattes. For the forty days of Lent I still went out for ‘coffee’ but instead ordered a glass of water with my cake! It was only a small sacrifice really, but it did make me think about the many things I take for granted in my life. Giving up tv is a much bigger challenge for me, but I know that every remote-free night will be another night I am reminded of how rich I am, and how luxury laden my life is.
You might not be ready to give anything up for forty days, but what about one week, or even just one day? For mums in Australia, mothering is pretty cruisy. Could you go a month without using the clothes drier? A week without opening a jar of ready-made baby food? A day without disposable nappies? Leave a comment if you’re brave enough to give it a go. It just might change your perspective in the long term – that’s called Lent for Life.
PS: I’m not giving up Playschool. That doesn’t count.
