If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that Little Miss Three has a vivid imagination. She loves make believe games, and has more than one or two imaginary little friends. So I wasn’t surprised that she asked this question at breakfast. Since a few mums have asked me how to explain God to kids, I thought you’d like to eavesdrop on our conversation. It went something like this:
LM3: Mummy, my fairies are having breakfast on the table today.
Me: That’s nice. I hope they are eating up all their cereal.
LM3: Yep, but it’s just...

We’ve had rain in Brisbane! Real rain, with thunder and everything! Rain to tickle our faces and catch on our tongues. Rain to brighten the colours of everything in the garden, making it fresh all over again. Rain to catch in buckets, containers and watering cans. Rain to gush out of downpipes, overflowing out of little hands. Rain to create little rivers on the dry ground, perfect for leaf boats. ...

With so many classic stories and poems about boys and bears you’d think I would understand. But really, it hasn’t been until I have watched my own son form a friendship with his bear that I have begun to appreciate the relationship. My little boy can’t go to sleep without “Fabbie” (long story, don’t ask)! Fabbie is cuddled daily and sits on the table to watch his big mate have...

When I was a little girl I loved watching my mum dress up. I still remember watching her paint her nails and smelling her perfume. Now that I’m a mum with a daughter of my own, the cycle goes on. Last week I dressed up for a hats and heels morning tea with my MOPS group.
My three year old’s eyes were wide as she surveyed my red toenails, and tried on my shoes. But oh the look on her face when I added...

I’m blogging over at Aussie Mums Network Mumblers today about busy boxes. Having a few boxes set up indoors and out can make free play time with kids a breeze. For ideas on different types of boxes, and what to put into them, head over to Mumblers. There are photos of our indoor, outdoor and quiet time boxes in the article. Here’s a snippet…
A Busy Box is a container filled with age appropriate...

When I made the move from teaching upper primary to early childhood, I was amazed at how much my students learned, changed and developed in twelve short months. When I made the move from working with five year olds (who suddenly seemed very grown up) to having my own kids, I was blown away at the rapid pace of learning.
Just this week I watched my daughter finger painting. It was only four months ago that I blogged...

As a teacher and as a mum bullying is an issue worth worrying about. My experience has been that children who are resilient, have good self esteem and have friends are highly unlikely to be targeted by bullies in the early years. But how do we build those skills into our young kids?
Head over to Parenting Australia to read my post on avoiding bullying in the early years. You can comment here or there.

What could be more fun than a day at the beach?! With Queensland having unseasonably warm weather, we took the kids to the Sunshine Coast for some quality family time. We all had a wonderful time, but for different reasons. Here’s what we did to prepare for our mini-stay and get the most out of our beach trip.
In the week leading up to our beach holiday the kids and I went to the library and borrowed some...

This post is by Little Miss 3. Since it’s Father’s Day I asked her about her Dad.
“My Daddy is really helpful and he carries me all the time. He swings my brother up really high. He’s really big-strong. He fixes stuff and I watch him. My Daddy, um, sometimes cuts the leaves off the trees in the garden. He puts them in the truck (ute) and takes them to the dump. Daddy buys things all...
