With My Little Eye
It was a dreary day today for the start of winter, so we stayed indoors and played. That’s one of the nice things about being a SAHM! My three year old and I had a lovely time drawing together and it somehow evolved into a variation of I Spy (or is it Eye Spy?)
I probably would have assumed this game was completely beyond her if it hadn’t naturally come out of what she was already doing. First she drew a little basket that was on the craft table. It was green with blue handles, and she didn’t do a bad job! “Look Mummy! Guess what I drew?” she said. So I guessed a few random things around the house before guessing the basket, and then it was my turn. “I spy with my little eye something that looks like this!” The game was on. I commentated as I drew to give her clues about colour, size and shape. It was possibly more entertaining for me than it was for her as she attempted to draw items from around the loungeroom. Some looked more like the real thing than others (eg: the picture of her baby brother’s link rings – above).
The game came to an abrupt halt though when I couldn’t work out this picture:
I should have know better than to play I Spy with a child whose world is cohabited by imaginary animals. As far as she was concerned the purple elephant in the room was fair game!

very cute – great artist in the making .
My almost 3 yrs can’t draw but they are very artist with the walls , table and window sills.
Ps my boys still love their link rings too as bangles.
Great game! And that is one awesome purple elephant – definitely a budding artist.
LOL – I wasn’t sure that anyone other than her mother would actually see a purple elephant in that picture!
Well I think it’s obvious! You must have been having an off day…. doesn’t everyone have a purple elephant in their lounge room?
We do.
Gorgeous – she’s very clever. As a little experiment I just asked my 3yo old son what it was a picture of (wondering if all 3yo’s can see the obvious purple elephant) and his response… “That’s a cool fish.” LOL Her art is being appreciated already!
Our family went to an informal piano recital the other day and afterward at the refreshments portion of the event my daughter was running around with her little friend. After a couple of tries at asking them to use walking feet I decided to try to get them more actively engaged in a quiet game. We played eye spy for several turns each and I was thrilled that it helped them quiet down and even SIT for short periods of time. We stuck with non-imaginary items in the room, but it was still fun!
