Sock Puppets

img_7480I am constantly amazed at the odd socks that come through the wash every week.  Where on earth do their other halves go?!  I generally put lonely socks into the drawer and hope that they are soon united with their partners, but if all else fails (and they aren’t too smelly) they are given a new lease of life as puppets.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that I’m not much of a sewer.  I’m a glue-and-go kind of mum.  And besides, gluing makes for quick, toddler friendly craft.

All we used for this activity was fabric glue, felt and googly eyes, and of course our dejected socks.

img_7507Firstly I put the plain sock onto my hand to show the kids how it would make a “puppet”.  It’s funny how children don’t really even need anything added for it to come alive.  They were giggling at my talking hand before we even started gluing bits on.  I cut out circle shapes for eyes, and my three year old glued them on.  I asked what else she thought the puppet needed and she decided on a mouth, which I interpreted as tongue, and hair.  She was fascinated with the way I cut the hair, and has been snipping bits of paper this way ever since!  (It’s always lovely to see a child pick up a skill from a structured activity and adopt it in their own creative play.)  Adding the googly eyes was the final touch.  My ten month old thought these were hilarious!

Stiletto and Sneaker (ok, so my daughter might have had a little help with naming them…) have starred in countless plays, shows and stories this week.  I love a craft activity that gives continued enjoyment beyond the making process, and especially love that it has entertained both a toddler and a baby.blogchicksclickie-1

We have puppets all over our house. Some to chat to while on the toilet (long story, two chefs in the kitchen to help us cook lunch dinner and the occasional treat and in the playroom. Both the kids think they are fantastic.

  2. That is an awesome idea. My washing machine eats socks…. hehe

Now I know what to do with the leftovers.

I have SO many odd socks sitting in a spare laundry basket waiting for their long-lost partner to turn up. Where do they disappear to? There must be some parallel sock universe somewhere…
Another fab, simple idea Cath. Thanks!

I spend all my time looking at the odd sock basket and hoping that the pairs will magically reunite. Maybe it’s time for some sock puppets here too.

I have posted a blog love token/award for you over at my blog today.

    Have a great week,

  6. I throw odd socks back into the wash and 9 times out of ten they are reunited with their partner!!!

Check under the washing machine, that’s where my odds are usually found.

    Cute sock puppets Cath :)

Those sock puppets have real personality!

(Always good to hear of someone else who is much better with glue than thread! :) )

The only socks that go missing in this house are far too tiny to make into puppets. I might have to buy special puppet making socks me thinks.
