Rain And More Rain

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but it’s been a bit wet in Brisbane over the last week or two.  Rain, rain and more rain.  I’m all for letting kids have a play in their raincoats and gumboots, but you can only do that for so long before you get soggy children.  So, while the weather has been like this…

We’ve been designing layouts for trains, and narrating our own adventures for the engines (in every story the Fat Controller has to get cross and say, “You have caused confusion and delay!”  Of course)…

…and constructing intricate buildings and block towers like this for the passengers to visit when they disembark from the trains.

On the wet weekends we’ve made inside cubbies big enough for even a Daddy to fit inside (and cushions, toys, shoes, etc) too.

But now that the rain seems to finally be clearing, we’re left with grass that looks like this…!!

What do you do indoors with the kids when the rain really sets in?  (By the way, Damon has totally taken care of the grass situation now.  It isn’t still like this!)

being the insane mum that I am, we have a small bike, coupe car and slide inside. I have a string line up with balls hanging down from it to hit with tennis rackets, books books books and more books, tv, online games, heaps of fun cooking and easter craft. The trampoline is great as it dries pretty quick between showers, we also play under the patio. The only thing we dont really do is go on a bike ride or the swings. In the rain its life as usual. I set Zoe up with the wii fit to burn off some energy she loves yoga, step class and jogging. Oh and the hula hoop option is great. Anyone not yet got a wii fit pack grab one now!

I love their buildings and the cubby. Here’s what we did on a few rainy days last year (considering Perth has had a 3 month drought I can’t show anything recent!).

  5. This rain has been crazy…it’s been going and going and going and going….

The girls and I have been doing lots of train play too but we have also enjoyed puppet shows (love my old resources!!), making up concerts, art (drawing, cutting, glueing), board games, reading and playing libraries.

Hoping for some dry weather this week so we can enjoy the outdoors again. Love the rain though. Thank you God!

  7. Indoor picnics are a hit in our house at the moment, thanks to a Charlie & Lola book. Immy packs her tea set and felt sandwich kit into a basket which I bought at the op shop and off we go for a picnic! So much fun.

well, it’s raining here too and my hubs is down your way, so that makes it doubly hard! my daughter had a playdate, we’ve done an alphabet hunt, had an indoor picnic, played on our wii, and today lots of activities for pi day (3/14, as we say here in the states–do you write the date the other way round?) oh! and i planned in advance some activities at our fantastic library and community center!

  9. I’ve found the wet weather an opportunity to pull out toys my children haven’t played with for a while. Love the cubby house. We have a spare bunk bed in the play room and boy, it’s been a lot of fun!

We all love the kid’s bunk bed. The underside doubles as a monkey bar (with a nice soft landing pad), a few blankies off Mum and Dad’s bed make it into a beaut cubby house and spot-lighting location (torches and shadow puppets are a must) and we have even made the walls into an art gallery, showcasing all the art and craft the kids have produced during our ‘inside time’!
