Jungle Cave
The kids and I inherited a large box last week. We tossed around a few ideas before finally deciding to turn our big box into a jungle cave. Vines were not negotiable, so I rummaged through the fabric box and found some long strips of green and brown fabric which did the job perfectly. I had visions of attaching leaves creatively, but the kids were keen to use them so I reminded myself it wasn’t actually my jungle cave! Due to a cold wind, chesty coughs and runny noses we stayed inside, only venturing out to collect some real leaves to add to the scene, and some sticks to make a “campfire” inside. The kids enjoyed eating their lunch in the cave together.
A couple of days later, with the sun shining and the kids’ health on the improve, we took the box outside and set up the jungle cave in our backyard. For a simple box, a tablecloth and a few scraps of fabric, it sure made a fun playspace!
Where have your kids been playing this week? Inside, outside, or both?!

I love your jungle idea. My girls are always so excited when a new big box arrives for them to customise. One of our favourites was a story box, where the girls lay inside and drew and wrote stories on every surface.(I’ve added the link if you’d like to see). I wondered if you might come over the our Play Academy and link this post – my readers would love it. http://nurturestore.co.uk/the-play-academy

It looks wonderful! It looks like ther perfect place to play and imagine.
I had a new washing machine delivered last week so we had a nice big box of our own to play with. It provided hours of fun for the children here
Love the cave and creative play!
My boys are a bit bigger – and they were out and about at their treehouse. They had friends over, so enjoyed campfire cooking – which cleaned up a lot of fallen twigs and leaves and kept them busy gathering timber.
This is their treehouse… http://katswhiskers.wordpress.com/2010/06/14/tree-to-be/

Dens outdoors are the best! Even in winter I encourage lots of cubbies – just add fleece blankets and old sleeping bags into the mix.

There are only a few toys that can compete with a cardboard box: sticks, balls, dolls . . . that’s about it! =)

I love that you had to remind yourself that it wasn’t your jungle cave. I also tend to get a bit carried away with the kids ideas. This post reminds me of the book “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis.
It is very hot here in Texas and we have been trying to keep cool at the river. We would love to trade days with you in the middle of the summer, you could have a few warm days and we could have a few cold days. Wouldn’t that be GREAT!

That is sooooo fantastic
My girls are really impressed by all the boxes in the house while we pack to move. Not so impressed that Mummy has banned playing with them until AFTER we move. But once in the new place there will be several play boxes set aside for them
What a fantastic jungle cave, I want to hide out in there

Ooh, was that our box? It didn’t even occur to me to get inside it until the kids came over!
